UTA launches into summer construction schedule with S-Line streetcar extension and grade crossing

SALT LAKE CITY (May 20, 2026) — The Utah Transit Authority will kick off its summer construction schedule this month with the extension of the S-Line streetcar and the rebuilding of the 2100 South grade crossing. These projects support UTA’s State of Good Repair (SGR) plan and commitment to prioritizing safety, system upgrades and overall improvement.

UTA’s 2026 maintenance and construction plan focuses on keeping lines in a state of good repair. These projects will update existing infrastructure, make repairs and perform necessary maintenance to ensure that the system continues to provide safe and reliable service for all UTA customers.

S-Line Extension


  • Extending the line approximately one quarter-mile across Highland Drive and building a new station near Highland Drive and Simpson Avenue to serve the Sugar House business district and the University of Utah Sugar House Health Center.
  • Temporary lane impacts at Simpson Avenue and 1100 East from May 26 to July 28 during the first phase of the project.
  • Construction of the S-Line extension is expected to be completed by Fall 2027.
  • Riders: The S-Line will continue operations during construction. Riders may experience brief service interruptions for upgrades. Riders will be notified prior to any planned disruptions.
  • Drivers: Expect temporary closures and turn restrictions for the next several weeks. Please follow posted traffic control and detour signs and allow extra travel time.
  • Pedestrians: Expect sidewalk and shoulder closures near active work areas, including a closure on westbound Simpson Avenue sidewalk. Parley’s Trail is planned to remain open during construction.

2100 South SGR


  • May 24 to June 20
  • Rebuild of 2100 South grade crossing, rail replacement and infrastructure upgrades.
  • TRAX Blue and Red Lines will suspend service between Ballpark Station and Meadowbrook Station. A bus bridge will be in place.
  • TRAX Green Line will suspend service between Ballpark Station and River Trail Station. A bus bridge will be in place.
  • Riders should expect delays of 30 minutes or more.

600 South Grade Crossing SGR


  • July 5-11
  • Rebuilding track at the 600 South intersection.
  • TRAX Blue and Green Lines will suspend service between Ballpark Station and Gallivan Plaza Station. A bus bridge will be in place.
  • TRAX Red Line will suspend service between Ballpark Station and Library Station. A bus bridge will be in place.
  • Riders should expect delays of 15 to 30 minutes.

East 9th Avenue Curves SGR


  • July 25 to Aug 15
  • Cleaning ballast, replacing worn rails, realigning and resurfacing track.
  • TRAX Red Line will operate on a single track between Fashion Place Station and Historic Gardner Station.
  • Riders should expect delays of 15 to 30 minutes.
